With all the April holidays it's a crazily busy time of the year at Ikamva Labantu. The beginning of the month saw the launch of our Chess 4 Hope mini-site where you can learn more about how this initiative is addressing problems found in township schools by introducing children to the game of chess.
Read on to learn more about what we have been up to, we hope you find "making a difference" as exciting as we do.

SIRDAR — AN INSPIRING BUSINESS EVENT

The Sirdar Cape Town Business Summit, which focuses on growing businesses and empowering communities through enterprise, has partnered with Ikamva Labantu. In future we would like to extend the partnership to access Sirdar's skills & resources. AN EXCITING HOLIDAY PROGRAM TO STIMULATE LEARNERS

From the 6th to the 9th of April 2009, Chess 4 Hope (an Ikamva Labantu initiative) organised a holiday program at Ikamva Labantu's Rainbow centre in Gugulethu. This holiday program, which was designed to educate and entertain learners during the April school holidays, exposed the children to diverse and stimulating activities such as basketball, chess, yoga, meditation, drama and Capoeira.

Lindy Kawalsky (the head of the drama department at Camps Bay High school) and three of her matric students entertained the learners with physical theatre and fun games. It was a fantastic opportunity for learners to explore their creative side. They were also very spoilt with a generous Easter egg collection from pupils at Camps Bay High school.

Janna Kretmar one of the co-founders of Earth Child Project entertained the learners with yoga, meditation and different techniques that can assist with stress alleviation and relaxation. Janna and her team specialize in the above activities (and more) in underprivileged schools in and around Cape Town.
