August 2008 Update

Getting down and earthy...

The aim of Miss Earth South Africa is to create a sustainable difference in our challenge to combat the destruction of our planet. It was very fitting then that Miss Earth SA 2008, Matapa Maila, visited our Multi Purpose Centre in Gugulethu and spent time with our food gardeners. Enthusiastically, they asked her questions and listened attentively as she shared her learnings with them. They, in turn, proudly shared their successes, challenges and contributions regarding the land, and recognised the occasion by planting a tree.

Thanks, Matapa, for taking time to meet our gardeners — we support beauty with a purpose!

Chess for Hope, an Ikamva Labantu Initiative, was started in April 2007 to introduce children in disadvantaged communities to chess. This programme started with 30 students and has grown to include 800 students.

Research has demonstrated the value of chess to children's academic and social development: it aids memory retention and critical thinking, improves concentration and promotes creativity and imagination. Chess also instils a sense of respect among players and develops progressive thinking skills that may help disadvantaged children to deal with adversities.

We are proud to announce that two of Chess 4 Hope's students have been selected for Western Province under-10 chess team. We hope to build on this achievement by continuing to spread all this game has to offer.
