November was an exciting and eventful month. Read all about the happenings that took place. Please note: the next Ikamva Labantu newsletter will sent out at the end of January.

GOLDEN OLDIES

Cultural Day, Ikamva Labantu's annual seniors' event, was held on 29 October 2008. Judging by the turnout and the reactions of our seniors, fun was had by all. Staying on the topic of seniors, the past three months (September to November 2008) saw the start and completion of governance training — a programme in which 28 emerging seniors' organisations received training.

COMMUNITY CHESS

We are thrilled to announce that Chess 4 Hope is growing rapidly — there are currently 766 learners from various schools participating in our regular activities and competitions. The Rainbow Centre in Gugulethu hosts after-school programmes three times a week. In recent tournaments, two of the 20 learners from that group were selected to represent Western Province. They will join the national chess team and compete in an end-of-year competition in Potchefstroom. Quite something for these youngsters, as it'll be the first time that they have been on a plane. Ikamva Labantu wishes you a safe journey and the best of luck!

TOP OF THE CROPS

Last month, Ikamva Labantu's food gardeners held an awards ceremony as an acknowledgement of the training they received during the year. Many of the participants grow their own vegetables and tend a well-kept vegetable patch, which enables them to prepare nutritious meals to feed their families.

Best regards
The Ikamva Labantu team
